Pool Water Testing
There are certain guidelines we should follow when maintaining our swimming pool. For the health of bathers, we should be testing our pool water at least once a week. Especially during the busy, hot and rainy summer periods. In South Africa’s Durban KwaZulu Natal, anyway.
Keep the chlorine residual between 1 & 3 parts per million (ppm). This keeps the water sanitised. Keep the pH between 7.2 & 7.6. This is the optimum pH for bather comfort and sanitizer efficiency. These are the basic tests every pool owner should do each week.
It could be that your test results are ideal (chlorine and pH) but your pool water is green or murky. This means there are other factors such as poor filtration, circulation or water balance causing the problem. The first step is to take a sample of water to a specialist pool shop that can test for chloramines, Total Alkalinity, Stabilizer, and TDS. If the pool shop is an NSPI member, then you should be in good hands. Once the water balance is corrected, if the problem persists, you may need to get a technician to call on your pool and assess what other problems may exist.
