Some of the most basic things are overlooked when building a swimming pool. For example, where to position the weir, where to position the aimflow jet and the filter and pump.
Having a badly positioned weir could render the pool a nightmare to maintain. The best place to place the weir is in the middle of the length of the swimming pool so that the Kreepy Krauly or Baracuda automatic pool cleaner hoses have an equal distance to the two furthermost points of the swimming pool from the weir. Another thing to consider about positioning the weir is in which direction does the wind mostly blow? The weir should be facing the wind so that it can skim the leaves from the surface of the pool when the Kreepy isn’t plugged in. (Hence the American name for the weir is the ‘skimmer box’.
As a rule, if a pool is longer than 6 meters in length, we like to fit 2 aimflow jets on either side of the weir. This gives the pool maximum circulation and prevents circulatory ‘dead spots’ in the pool. You will be amazed at how a small consideration like this costs very little to do, and will save you heaps of time and money in the long run.
We always try, as far as possible, to place the pump and filter at the same height as the water level and not further than 10 meters away from the pool. The filtration plant can be further than 10 meters, but then it’s advisable to upgrade the pump and filter to accommodate for the extra distance.
This picture below was recently taken of a swimming pool we built nearly 2 years ago (2014) and as you can see, the pool looks sparkling all year round, and our client hardly has to spend time on cleaning it.
